What is PMDD?

PMDD is a cyclical condition linked to hormonal fluctuations during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle (the time after ovulation and before menstruation). It’s characterized by intense emotional and physical symptoms that typically occur one to two weeks before menstruation and improve or resolve within a few days after menstruation begins.

Key Symptoms of PMDD:

  • Severe Mood Swings: Intense irritability, anger, or sadness.
  • Anxiety and Tension: Feeling overwhelmed, restless, or on edge.
  • Depression and Hopelessness: Persistent feelings of sadness, worthlessness, or despair.
  • Difficulty Concentrating: Trouble focusing, memory problems, or mental fog.
  • Fatigue and Low Energy: Feeling exhausted, even after adequate sleep.
  • Changes in Appetite: Food cravings, binge eating, or loss of appetite.
  • Sleep Disturbances: Insomnia or hypersomnia (excessive sleepiness).
  • Physical Symptoms: Headaches, bloating, breast tenderness, muscle aches.
  • Feelings of Being Overwhelmed or Out of Control.

Causes of PMDD:

While the exact cause of PMDD is unknown, it’s believed to be related to:

  • Hormonal Fluctuations: Sensitivity to normal changes in estrogen and progesterone levels.
  • Neurotransmitter Imbalances: Variations in serotonin levels, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood.
  • Genetic Predisposition: A family history of PMDD or other mood disorders may increase your risk.
